NYU Students’ Social Entrepreneurial Venture On Behalf Of Low-Income Middle School Strivers Wins $11,000 in the NYU Reynolds Changemaker Challenge

A social-change initiative developed by a team of New York University undergraduate students to help “level the playing field” for economically disadvantaged middle school students has been selected as Best Overall Venture in the 2012-13 NYU Reynolds Changemaker Challenge (CmC).

The student team’s prize includes an award of $11,000 and high-value, technical assistance to launch its venture, Student to Student, this summer. Members of the team include: Steven Chan (Steinhardt); Anna Le (College of Arts and Science), and Andy Ng (Liberal Studies Program).

Student to Student aims to close the education gap by providing tutoring assistance to under-resourced middle school students who are striving to gain admission into New York City’s specialized public high schools. The program supports and encourages pupils to recognize and reach their fullest potential despite systemic economic advantages. The program has begun recruiting tutors and middle school partners.

In addition to announcing the Best Overall Venture award, NYU Reynolds also acknowledges the 2013 CmC seed grant recipients – Rescuing Leftover Cuisine, and Soup Up! – for their exceptional social entrepreneurial ventures. Soup Up! is a food truck that offers low-cost, nutritious soup to low-income families living in New York City neighborhoods where fresh food options are, at best, scarce. Rescuing Leftover Cuisine’s mission is to create a self-sustaining system for rescuing leftover food for consumption by the hungry in order to eliminate food waste and reduce hunger.

Now in its seventh year, the Changemaker Challenge invites all NYU undergraduatestudents who want to change the world to compete for $1,000 maximum seed grants and a Grand Prize of up to $11,000.

The Changemaker Challenge will continue in the 2013-14 academic year and is open to all New York University undergraduate students in teams of two or more. Ventures developed by student teams can be any student-created, student-led organization, program or business that benefits the community and has a measurable, positive, social impact. For profit, non-profit and hybrid ventures are eligible. Ventures must be completely new initiatives or a major new initiative of an existing organization (ventures that have received funding from NYU Reynolds and/or Youth Venture in the past are not eligible).
