Art History’s Rice Selected for National Humanities Center Fellowship

May 9, 2013

Louise Rice, an associate professor in NYU’s Department of Art History, has been named a Fellow of the National Humanities Center for 2013-14. Under the fellowship, Rice will study “conclusions”—elaborate dedicatory engravings used in 17th century Rome to decorate thesis broadsheets of students undergoing an academic defense.

While many of these works were created by renowned artists of the period, they have largely been ignored by scholars. Rice, author of “The Altars and Altarpieces of New St. Peter’s: Outfitting the Basilica, 1621-1666,” among other works, will examine conclusions’ visual language and, through them, explore the celebratory discourse that surrounded higher education in Rome 400 years ago.

These newly appointed Fellows will constitute the 36th class of resident scholars to be admitted since the Center, located in the Research Triangle Park of North Carolina, opened in 1978.
