SECOND AVENUE DANCE COMPANY 2013 SPRING CONCERT TO FEATURE WORKS BY MARK MORRIS, KYLE ABRAHAM, ALEX KETLEY AND ANDREA MILLER

April 2, 2013
N-141

Second Avenue Dance Company/2013 (SADC) will present its annual spring concert series this year for six performances beginning April 3 and running through April 8. The spring series will feature new and repertory works by four noted guest choreographers—Mark Morris, Kyle Abraham, Alex Ketley, and Andrea Miller—and also highlight selected works choreographed by students in the Department of Dance in the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University.

Presented each night will be two world premieres and two repertory works: Mark Morris’s brilliant Pacific, created for the San Francisco Ballet in 1995, is the first of Morris’s dances using pointe work to be staged with a student company and will feature the music of Lou Harrison played live; Tisch School alumnus Kyle Abraham’s new Continuous Relation, a driving, thrill ride of uniquely physical and personal movement invention blending street and classic modern dance influences; San Francisco-based Alex Ketley’s new Five Objects (in Isolation and Solitude), a highly nuanced gestural and spiritually poetic work of abstract, dramatic intensity; and Andrea Miller’s vivid and exciting Wonderland, created for her company in 2010 as an evening-length work and re-worked specifically for the SADC dancers in Miller’s wildly inventive, theatrical, and feral style.

The selected student choreographers, whose diverse works will rotate in repertory, are Franklin Barefoot, Shannon Gillen, Sergio Tapia-Fikes, and Chuck Wilt.

The SADC/2013 Spring Concert opens Wed., April 3 and runs for six performances through Mon., April 8, 2013. Curtain is 8 p.m. Admission is $10; seniors $5 and students with ID are free. All proceeds benefit the Tisch Dance Scholarship Fund. Performances will take place in the Fifth Floor Theatre, 111 Second Avenue, New York City. For reservations and information, call 212.998.1982 (Mon.-Fri. between 1 and 5 p.m. only).

SADC, the resident dance company of the Department of Dance, Tisch School of the Arts at New York University, comprises students in their final year of training and is designed to serve as the dancers’ transition into the professional world of dance. Cherylyn Lavagnino, chair of the Department of Dance, and James Sutton, associate arts professor, are co-directors of SADC.
