NYU Steinhardt and the NYU Symphony Orchestra Present David Byrne’s, "The Forest," Mon. Feb. 27, 6:00 p.m.

February 22, 2012

The NYU Steinhardt School of Culture, Education and Human Development’s Department of Music and Performing Arts Professions and the NYU Symphony Orchestra present David Byrne’s classic work, The Forest. First performed in New York more than 20 years ago, this special presentation of Byrne’s definitive work will feature Jonathan Haas, director of the NYU Contemporary Music Ensemble in his conducting debut, graduate student composers Tim Hansen and Ian Ng, and vocal soloists Christina Courtin and Ryan Scott.

The concert is Monday, Feb. 27 at 8:00 p.m. at the Peter Norton Symphony Space located at 2537 Broadway at 95th St. Tickets are $25 for general admission, $15 for students, and $5 for NYU students. For additional show information call 212-864-5400 or visit:

The Forest premiered at the Theater der Freien in Berlin in 1988. Directed by Robert Wilson, it premiered in New York in 1988 at the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM). Byrne once stated that, “The Forest is less a piece than a process. A process of discovering what it is we are made of.” Through this work, he calls for society “to take stock, to become aware of our prejudices and biases, before we can take the next step.”

Known as the force behind Talking Heads (1976-88) and later as creator of the highly-regarded record label Luaka Bop, Byrne also works as a photographer, film director, author, and solo artist. He has published and exhibited visual art for more than a decade. Recent works Here Lies Love (2010), a 22-song cycle about the life of Imelda Marcos in collaboration with Fatboy Slim and a collaboration with Will Oldham for the soundtrack to the upcoming Sean Penn film, "This Must be the Place."
