The Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development has been selected for 100Kin10, a collaborative movement created in response to the United States’ need for 100,000 new, excellent science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) teachers in 10 years.

The Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development has been selected for 100Kin10, a collaborative movement created in response to the United States’ need for 100,000 new, excellent science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) teachers in 10 years.

New York University’s Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development has been selected for 100Kin10, a collaborative movement created in response to the United States’ need for 100,000 new, excellent science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) teachers in 10 years.

The formation of 100Kin10 follows the Obama Administration’s 2009 announcement to move U.S. students from the middle to the top of the pack in math and science achievement over the next decade. In his 2011 State of the Union Address, President Obama called for a new effort to prepare 100,000 STEM teachers, over the next decade, with strong teaching skills and deep content knowledge, as recommended by the President’s Council of Advisors for Science and Technology (PCAST) in its 2010 report.

As a 100Kin10 partner institution, NYU Steinhardt will help achieve the organization’s goals through a range of initiatives, including:

 ·         Preparing 300 new STEM teachers over the next 10 years, an effort partly funded by a $2.1 million grant from the New York State Education Department;

·         Opening a STEME Education and Research Center, an advanced technology facility where faculty in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, and Environmental (STEME) education will research how teachers learn to teach STEME subjects and how children and youth, especially those in underserved communities, come to master these subjects.

·         Infusing environmental education modules into all teacher preparation programs and establishing the Digital Modeling for Teachers and Students Project to provide teachers and students with opportunities to use technology to study local ecology.
