CAS Announces 2011 Teaching Awards

Twelve members of the Faculty of Arts and Science have been honored as winners of the Golden Dozen awards.

Twelve members of the Faculty of Arts and Science have been honored as winners of the Golden Dozen awards.  They will be announced to the College of Arts and Science (CAS) community at the college’s Baccalaureate Ceremony, held at Jacob Javits Center North on Tuesday, May 17 at 11:00am.

The Golden Dozen awards celebrate those faculty members who have demonstrated excellence in teaching and service to undergraduates. All recipients were chosen based on student and faculty recommendations.

The selection process starts with nominations made online by colleagues and students. Academic departments are then asked to endorse the candidacy of the nominees. Once endorsed the candidates submit a teaching philosophy statement and their CVs. All of this information, along with undergraduate course evaluations, is reviewed by a CAS Faculty Committee that selects the recipients in each of the two categories: the Golden Dozen for tenure track/tenured faculty, clinical professors, and full-time language lecturers; the Outstanding Teaching Awards for adjunct instructors.

This year’s Golden Dozen winners are: Andre Adler (Clinical Associate Professor of Physics), Elizabeth Bauer (Clinical Assistant Professor of Psychology), Nathaniel Bennett (Language Lecturer of Expository Writing), Suzanne Cusick (Professor of Music), Maria Gouskova (Assistant Professor of Linguistics), Richard Hull (Professor of History), Kent Kirshenbaum (Associate Professor of Chemistry), Marc Lieberman (Clinical Professor of Economics), Michael Peachin (Professor of Classics), Michael Rampino (Professor of Biology), Joshua Tucker (Associate Professor of Politics), and Athena Vouloumanos (Assistant Professor of Psychology).

Finally, the Outstanding Teaching Award for adjunct instructors was given to: Brendon Charles Benz (Adjunct Instructor of Hebrew and Judaic Studies), Karen Auman (Adjunct Instructor of History), Eliahu Bendet-Taicher (Adjunct Instructor of Chemistry), Eun Ha Choi (Adjunct Instructor of Spanish and Portuguese), Anna Powers (Adjunct Instructor of Chemistry), and Cara Shousterman (Adjunct Instructor of Linguistics).
