Cutleaf Coneflower (Rudbeckia lacinata) north of the entrance to the Coles Sports Center, 181 Mercer Street.
We know from the accounts of early Dutch and English settlers in Manhattan that the island was home to a great variety of ecosystems, including grasslands. Thanks to the Mannahatta Project, we know that this week's plant, Cutleaf Coneflower (Rudbeckia lacinata) in flower right now at Coles, was possibly one of those meadow plants, in fact the only member of the genus Rudbeckia that may have been present on Manhattan island before European settlement. Cutleaf Coneflower is native from Quebec to Montana south to Arizona and Florida. It's a low-care, perennial with deeply cut leaves and very tall stems. This plant is of the same genus as Black-eyed Susan, one of the most recognizable wildflowers in our gardens, including in Mercer Plaza above the Cogen plant in front of Warren Weaver Hall. The plants of this genus blend well with ornamental grasses and other meadow wildflowers like Dense Blazing Star.
