Lenten Rose (Helleborus x hybridus) in the sidewalk median at 100 Bleecker Street (on the south side of Bleecker St).

As we wait for shirtsleeves weather to arrive, we can be encouraged to hang in there a bit longer by the blooms of Lenten Rose, like this one we planted last year on Bleecker Street.  Hellebores, also known as Lenten Rose because they flower during the Easter season of Lent, are not, despite their rose-like blooms, members of the rose family, but belong to the Butter Cup family.  These plants are adaptable to a variety of soil conditions, but prefer partly shaded or fully shaded sites. Its one requirement is good drainage. There are dozens of varieties of Lenten Rose to enliven your shaded early spring garden. During the rest of the year, Hellebores provide a lush  evergreen groundcover with glossy green foliage  It's a good idea to cut back the dead foliage in late winter to make room for new growth.  No wonder Helleborus x hybridus was selected as the 2005 Perennial Plant of the Year by the Perennial Plant Association: It's easy to grow, produces long lasting flowers, and provides year round interest. Who could ask for more?

I've also included 2 updated pictures of last week's plant, Camellia 'April Remembered' at Coles, because it's looking even better this week; look!--->>>>
