NYU Announces Performances of the New Play The Triangle Project

The Triangle Project, an original new ensemble work created by the 21- member cast in conjunction with director Nan Smithner and presented by NYU Steinhardt’s Program in Educational Theatre, will open October 28 and run through November 6, 2011. The production honors the 100th year anniversary of the Triangle Shirtwaist Company fire, which erupted in the factory’s building on the corner of Washington Place and Greene Streets on March 25, 1911.  One hundred forty six garment workers were killed in the fire. 

Through a fictional and dramatic investigation of the Triangle fire, which marked a turning point in the social awakening of America, the cast of The Triangle Project will present a portrait of a dynamic age where immigrants fought sweatshop owners and politicians for social justice.

The production will utilize a combination of storytelling, acting, physical theatre, music, song, and environmental theatre to offer a metaphorical response to the tragedy of the fire. The show will also interpret moments of human exchange during the hardships of New York City life in the early part of the 20th century, exploring, as well, the struggle for worker's rights, amidst the rise of progressive urban liberalism.

NYU’s production of The Triangle Project runs Oct. 28 & 29 and Nov. 4 & 5 at 8 p.m. and October 30 & November 6 at 3 p.m. at the Black Box Theatre, Pless Hall, located at 82 Washington Square East in New York City.  Tickets are $15 general admission and $5 for students/senior citizens.
