Russian Sage (Perovskia atriplicifolia) in the middle section of the Bleecker Street sidewalk between #3 and #4 Washington Square Village.

The NYU Garden Shop crew installed this week's plant, Russian Sage, last Friday as part of our big summer project alongside the Bleecker Street sidewalk at #3 and #4 Washington Square Village.  Residents there requested this plant for their new landscape, and I was more than happy to oblige as they made a great choice for this sunny spot!

Russian Sage, a member of the mint family native to Pakistan (its genus name Perovskia honors a Russian general), is a low-maintenance, long blooming perennial or subshrub with fragrant foliage and a cloud of small blue/purple flowers that appear in July and last all the way into September.  That's an exceptionally long period of bloom for a perennial, which makes it so useful in the garden.

We salute the residents of Washington Square Village for choosing such a great plant for their new garden!
