Another harbinger of spring, this hybrid Witch-hazel was planted at Washington Square Village in November of 2007. It's one of the earliest shrubs to bloom in the landscape, and its flowers are showy and fragrant.  Witch-hazel is a natural astringent and has several medicinal uses.  You can also see the native species of Witch-hazel, Hamamelis virginiana, leafing out later in the season in Mercer Plaza.  Hang in there, warmer weather is on its way!
