NYU College of Nursing to Honor Lynn R. Parker ’99 at 20th Annual Estelle Osborne Recognition Ceremony, Feb. 15

February 1, 2011
N-221, 2010-11

New York University College of Nursing has named Lynn R. Parker, RN, MA NP-BC, a 1999 graduate of the College, to be the guest speaker and honoree at its 20th annual Estelle Osborne Recognition Ceremony. Ms. Parker is honored for her commitment to patients’ rights and the prevention of medical errors. The ceremony will be held Tuesday, February 15, at 3:30 p.m. in the Shorin Performance Studio, NYU Kimmel Center, 8th Floor, 60 Washington Square South, on the NYU campus.

Lynn R. Parker, RN, MA NP-BC, healer, author, and patient advocate is the founder of HeavenSent Medical Services LLC.  While a student at NYU, Lynn served two terms as President of the College’s Advanced Nursing Student Organization and received the 1999 Rudin Family Award for Scholarship, Service, Leadership and Potential for Future Achievements.

Throughout her long and varied career Ms. Parker has been aware of the dangers of medical errors and the challenges nurses face advocating for their patients.  To help patients stay safe in the healthcare system and to improve nurses’ capacity to protect their patients, Ms. Parker wrote What Did the Doctor Just Say?  How to Understand What Your Doctor Is Saying and Prevent Medical Errors From Happening to You and Your Loved Ones, a work born out of her commitment to every patient having safe care.  Ms. Parker is dedicated to giving nurses a voice to speak up for their patients, a voice that will not endanger, but empower them as individuals and strengthen the nursing profession.

The Estelle Osborne Award was established to honor the extraordinary leadership of Professor Osborne (1901-1981), the first black faculty member at NYU, who taught from 1945 to 1954 in what is now the College of Nursing.
