“Drug Wars and Drug Laws” Conference to Analyze Role of Politics, Race, and Culture in Treatment—Jan. 14 at NYU

January 12, 2011

“Drug Wars and Drug Laws,” a conference presented by New York State Psychological Association’s Division on Addictions on January 14, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., will consider the role of politics, race, and culture in the treatment of addictions. The event will be held at New York University’s Kimmel Center for University Life, 60 Washington Square South (at LaGuardia Place), Eisner and Lubin Auditorium (4th Floor).

Race, class and culture are integral aspects of any clinical treatment, and they particularly affect the treatment of addictive disorders. The conference will examine these issues, and also consider the impact of the repeal of the Rockefeller Drug Laws and the implementation of Mental Health Parity and National Health Reform on addiction and remedies.

The keynote addresses will be delivered by Cheryl Grills, a professor of psychology at Loyola Marymount University (“African Centered Psychology: The Role of Cultural Context in Interventions,” 9:15-10:15 a.m.) and Ethan Nadelmann, executive director of the Drug Policy Alliance (“Treating Addiction in a Hostile Environment,” 1:15-2:15 p.m.). Other sessions include “Refashioning Drug Policy in New York: From the Rockefeller Drug Laws to a Public Health and Safety Approach” (10:45 a.m.-noon) and “Culture and Race in Treatment” (2:30-3:45 p.m.).
