New York University’s Program in Vocal Performance will produce The Light in the Piazza, April 1-3, at 8 p.m., and Sunday, April 4 at 3 p.m. at the Frederick Loewe Theatre at 35 West 4th Street. Based on a novella by Elizabeth Spencer, the book is by Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize nominee Craig Lucas, and the music and lyrics are by Tony Award winner Adam Guettel, whose musical Floyd Collins was seen at Steinhardt in 2008.
The Light in the Piazza tells the story of Clara Johnson and her mother, Margaret, in the summer of 1953. While on vacation in Florence, Clara falls in love with a young Italian man named Fabrizio. She has to fight her mother’s opposition to their marriage for reasons that are revealed slowly throughout the course of the show.

The production is directed by William Wesbrooks, with musical direction by Grant Wenaus. The cast and orchestra will feature undergraduate and graduate students from the Department of Music and Performing Arts Professions at the Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development.
