Bassist, vocalist, and composer Esperanza Spalding will perform her new album Chamber Music Society at New York University’s Skirball Center for the Performing Arts on Thursday, September 30 at 8:00 p.m.  This newest project from the 25-year-old musical prodigy is contemporary chamber music, featuring the improvisational spontaneity and innovative elements of jazz combined with string trio arrangements and voice.  The result is a work that weaves jazz, folk, and world music into a unique recording revealing the artist’s early classical music training.

Chamber Music Society—set for release August 17—offers chamber music for modern times.  On it, Spalding has surrounded herself with a diverse group of musicians, including Leo Genovese (piano), Terri Lyne Carrington (drums), Quintino Cinalli (percussion), Sara Caswell (violin), Lois Martin (viola), Jody Redhage(cello) and Gretchen Parlato (vocals).

Born in 1984, Spalding has been making waves professionally in the jazz world since 2008 when her self-titled debut recording Esperanza was released.  Two years later, she continues to push the boundaries of jazz, exploring its intersections with other musical genres.  In 2009, Spalding was hand-picked by President Obama to play at his Nobel Peace Prize Award ceremony.
