Joel Oppenheim Wins 2010 AAAS Lifetime Mentor Award

December 1, 2010

Joel D. Oppenheim, professor of Microbiology and Senior Associate Dean for Biomedical Sciences at the NYU School of Medicine, was recently awarded the American Association for the Advancement of Sciences (AAAS) 2010 Lifetime Mentor Award.

AAAS is the worlds largest organization dedicated to advancing science around the world. The award honors an individual who has demonstrated extraordinary leadership in increasing the participation of underrepresented groups in the science and engineering fields. It especially recognizes an individual who has mentored a significant numbers of these students to the completion of doctoral degrees and who has impacted the climate of a institution to increase the diversity of students pursuing and completing doctoral studies.

Oppenheim, who has been on the NYU faculty for 37 years, will receive the award during a ceremony at the annual meeting of the AAAS in Washington, D.C. on Feb. 19.
