Master’s students from the Center for Publishing at The New York University School of Continuing and Professional Studies received the type of practice-based learning the School is famous for during a recent visit to the offices of Time Out New York, the leading arts and entertainment listings guide for New York City and an indispensable weekly guide for young, active, influential New Yorkers.
The students took part in an editorial and cover design meeting with Time Out editor-in-chief Michael Freidson and Time Out design director Adam Fulrath, who outlined his rules for a successful cover design. Four groups of students pitched ideas to Freidson and Fulrath for the cover design of the October 7-13 issue, with one group’s idea selected for the cover. The issue hits newsstands on Wednesday, October 6.
“It’s a testament to the work of our professors that the students were so well prepared to pitch in during an editorial session,” said Andrea Chambers, director of the Center for Publishing at NYU-SCPS. “These industry visits are a key part of the program. They provide networking opportunities and hands-on practice that help our students advance in their publishing careers. Our students are incredibly bright and creative, and it is especially gratifying to see their work and ideas adopted by a major media company and given such high visibility.”
"We liked all the students' ideas, but the finger-over-the-mouth resonated the most because the message 'I've got a secret' couldn't be clearer. And the tattoo on the finger—à la Rihanna and Lindsay Lohan—added just enough edge to be cute but not interfere with the idea," said Freidson. "Working with the students was terrific because they are our audience, and we listen to our audience—at least, the creative members. As media executives-in-training, the students are by necessity curious and idea-driven, and they proved that with their incisive questions during the visit."
