'Just Give Money to the Poor' - Sept. 21 Book Launch and Discussion at NYU Wagner

September 14, 2010

At this special book launch event at NYU Wagner on Tuesday, September 21, come hear from and converse with two authors of Just Give Money to the Poor, David Hulme and Armando Barrientos, as they challenge the international aid industry with an elegant southern alternative – bypass governments and NGOs and let the poor decide how to use their money.

Stressing that cash transfers are not charity or a safety net, the authors draw an outline of effective practices that work precisely because they are regular, guaranteed and fair. Their new accessible book is essential reading for policymakers, students of international development and anyone yearning for an alternative to traditional poverty alleviation methods.

The event will be held from 1:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Wagner’s home in the historic Puck Building – 295 Lafayette Street, 2nd Floor, lower Manhattan.  Jonathan J. Morduch, professor of public policy and economics at Wagner, will deliver introductory remarks.

The sponsors of the event are the Financial Access Initiative (FAI) at NYU Wagner, the Office of International Programs at NYU Wagner, and the Development Research Institute at New York University.
