Pete Hamill will be the featured speaker in “Down the Block: Time and Place in the East Village” on Thursday, September 23, 6-8 p.m., at New York University’s Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute (20 Cooper Square, between 5th and 6th Streets, 7th Floor). Subways: 6 (Astor Place); R (8th Street). The event is free and open to the public. Hamill, a novelist and former editor of both the New York Post and New York Daily News, is a Distinguished Writer in Residence at NYU’s Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute and The Jacob K. Javits Visiting Professor for the fall of 2010. They Are Us, an electronic book about immigration in the United States, is tentatively scheduled for release in the fall by Little, Brown & Company.

Hamill lived in the East Village in the late 50s and early 60s, when Jimi Hendrix lived across the street, the novelist Ted Hoagland down the block, and W.H. Auden a block away. Hamill will talk about ways to discover the neighborhood’s hidden past, from the Tenement Museum bookstore to the archives of the Village Voice.

Hamill has authored more than 20 books, including News Is a Verb: Journalism at the End of the Twentieth Century and A Drinking Life, as well as the novels Forever and North River. His novel Tabloid City will be published in the spring of 2011. Hamill has reported on wars in Vietnam, Nicaragua, Lebanon, and Northern Ireland. He has been a columnist for the New York Post, the New York Daily News, New York Newsday, the Village Voice, New York magazine, and Esquire.
