3rd Annual “Green Apple Move Out” Collection Drive Organized During Annual Dorm Move-Out, April 21st –May 12th
New York University, partnering with Goodwill Industries and City Harvest, is holding its 3rd annual Green Apple Move Out (GAMO) collection drive for NYU Residence Halls from April 21, 2010 to May 12, 2010. Collection areas will contain designated bins for your gently-used books, clothing and shoes, food (unopened, please), linens, techno-scrap, bicycles, furniture and small appliances. For more information please see www.nyu.edu/recycling
Last year, NYU collectively donated 73 tons of re-usable items to Goodwill Industries, ranging from clothes and blankets to mini-fridges. This was a huge jump in donations from the eight tons collected in the previous year GAMO collection program.
“The collection is a great demonstration of teamwork between facility managers, housing managers, residential education, NYU Recycling, and of course, the students,” said Sarah Boll, NYU’s recycling coordinator. ”By partnering with Goodwill, we were able to figure out how to include all of the residence halls, exponentially increasing the amount of items collected,” she said.
“”This is the largest donation Goodwill has received from students of a local university,” said Mauricio Hernandez, Goodwill’s senior vice president of retail sales.
Additionally, diverting 73 tons of reusable goods from landfills represents a two-percent reduction in the University’s overall total outgoing trash, and saves approximately $10,000 in waste-hauling costs.
