College students will present several web-based demos that gauge influence, allow users to search and download music, and exchange gag images on Tues., April 6, 7 p.m. at the Fashion Institute of Technology (Haft Auditorium [corner of 27th Street and 7th Avenue]).
Students from Rutgers University will present “Foursquare Candidates,” an application that leverages Foursquare and Twitter to determine who the most “influential” people are at a given place or event. Influence is determined by the number of twitter followers each person has as well as the frequency with which he or she tweets. A preview of the app can be found here.
Students from Columbia University will show “Dropioke,” a mashup of the drop.io file storage/sharing service and Twitter that locates drop.io file drops (links to uploaded files) on Twitter where the linked file is music. Essentially, “Dropioke” is a search engine for Twitter that detects music files stored on drop.io and then allows them to be played.
NYU students will present “Aviary Tennis,” a game implemented atop the Aviary web-based image editing software that makes it easy to add traits to an image (a moustache, a funny hat, etc). The tool also provides an interface for sharing the modified image with a friend and “lobbing” the image back and forth, as in a tennis match, generating a continuously evolving image.
The demos were created during the inaugural 24-hour “Hackathon” (April 2-3), held at New York University’s Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences, in which students from New York-area universities worked with datasets and technologies from the hottest NYC startups, including Foursquare, 10gen, Aviary, Chartbeat, and Hot Potato. Startups introduced and demo their technologies, then students had 24 hours to develop their own products and demos.
