March 18, 2010
N-324, 2009-10

Directed by Nicholas Hytner, and Featuring Frances de la Tour and Richard Griffiths

A Digital Broadcast from the UK’s National Theatre in London To Be Screened at NYU’s Skirball Center for the Performing Arts, April 22

New York University’s Skirball Center for the Performing Arts will screen a high-definition digital satellite broadcast of the London production of the National Theatre’s The Habit of Art at 7:00 p.m. on April 22, 2010.  Tony Award-winner Nicholas Hytner (The History Boys) directs this star-studded cast that includes Frances de la Tour and Richard Griffiths, both of whom won Tony Awards for their performances in The History Boys.

Alan Bennett is one of the UK’s most prolific living playwrights. His new play, The Habit of Art is as much about the theatre as it is about poetry and music. Chronicling a fictionalized meeting between Benjamin Britten and W. H. Auden, it looks at the unsettling desires of two difficult men and at the ethics of biography. It reflects on growing old, creativity, inspiration, and on persisting when all passion’s spent; ultimately, on the habit of art.

The screening runs 2 hours, 35 minutes with one intermission and is not recommended for children under 15.  NT Live is funded in partnership with Arts Council England and NESTA and supported internationally by Travelex. NT Live events are distributed outside the U.K. through New York-based BY Experience, Inc.

Reserved-seating tickets are $20-$25 and may be purchased online at www.skirballcenter.nyu.edu, by phone at 212.352.3101 (toll-free 866.811.4111), or in person at the Skirball Center Box Office.  NYU’s Skirball Center for the Performing Arts is located at 566 LaGuardia Place (at Washington Square South).  For a complete and current calendar, visit: www.skirballcenter.nyu.edu.
