Lynn Videka, dean of the Silver School of Social Work at New York University, will deliver a talk on Wednesday, February 24 entitled “Women and Leadership: Science Findings and Personal Choices.”
Her remarks will begin at 4:00 p.m. at the school, located at 1 Washington Square North, New York, N.Y. Media coverage is invited.
Key scientific findings about effective leadership have emerged, along with clear findings that women still lag in pay and representation in key leadership roles in nonprofits and in government, as well as in business. Dean Videka will address these issues, the mounting evidence about the importance of transactional and transformational leadership, as well as the role of negotiation in organizational and personal performance. She will also discuss the link between institutionalized sexism and individual experience, setting personal goals, using one’s personal style to effectively lead, and each individual’s responsibility to change institutionalized racism and sexism.
Dr. Videka joined the NYU Silver School of Social Work as dean in September 2009. She previously served as dean and professor at the School of Social Welfare at the State University of New York – Albany. Her research interests include peer-helping models for people facing life crises, the effectiveness of social work practice, and the intersection of family life and mental health, especially among vulnerable populations.
She has held many leadership roles in social work education, including President of the National Association of Deans and Directors of Social Work and the Institute for the Advancement of Social Work Research, Vice President of the Society for Social Work and Research, and Commissioner of Accreditation and Treasurer of the Council on Social Work Education, among others.
