N-218, 2009-10

Exceeds 38,000 Applications for the First Time

New York University today announced that it received the largest number of freshman applications in the University’s history. For the first time, over 38,000 high school seniors applied to be NYU freshmen. Some 38,037 men and women applied for spots in NYU’s class of 2014, exceeding last year’s record by 857 applications.

Randall Deike, NYU’s Vice President for Enrollment Management, said, “We are proud to continue to see this level of interest in NYU, particularly given the economy and the declining demographics of graduating high school students.”

Since 1991, applications for freshman admission to NYU have nearly quadrupled.

The deadline for applications was January 1; applicants will be notified of NYU’s admissions decisions on April 1; those who are accepted must choose by May 1.

There were 3,140 early decision applicants this year, up from 2,987 last year. This included 236 early applicants to NYU’s new campus in Abu Dhabi, and 235 early applicants who asked to be considered for both campuses. NYU accepted 1,093 early applicants for the Washington Square campus, and 62 for the Abu Dhabi campus.

New York University, located in the heart of Greenwich Village, was established in 1831 and is one of America’s leading research universities. It is one of the largest private universities in the U.S.; it has one of the largest contingents of international students, and sends more students to study abroad than any other college or university in the U.S. Through its schools and colleges, NYU conducts research and provides education in the arts and sciences, law, medicine, business, dentistry, education, nursing, the cinematic and dramatic arts, music, public administration, social work, and continuing and professional studies, among other areas.
