New York University is pleased to welcome Dr. Tara Cortes to the NYU College of Nursing. Dr. Cortes is the first Mathy D. Mezey Visiting Professor of Geriatric Nursing. She will be working with the Hartford Institute for Geriatric Nursing and the Nurses Improving Care for Healthsystem Elders (NICHE) Program, which imports principles and tools to stimulate a change in the culture of healthcare facilities to achieve patient-centered care for older adults. Dr. Cortes will be involved in development for the College and she will also be teaching Nurse-Client Therapeutic Interaction.
Tara has had an impressive career spanning executive leadership, nursing education, research and practice, said Dean Terry Fulmer of the NYU College of Nursing. She is a true asset to our organization and we are honored to be working with her.
Before coming to the NYU College of Nursing, Dr. Cortes served as President and CEO of Lighthouse International, a respected not-for-profit dedicated to fighting vision loss through prevention and treatment. In this role, Dr. Cortes changed the paradigm of vision loss from that of a charitable service to health care delivery system. Prior to her role at Lighthouse International, Dr. Cortes was Senior Vice President for Patient Care Operations and Chief Nursing Officer at Yale New Haven Health System, Bridgeport Hospital.
I look forward to contributing to the Hartford Institute and its outstanding NICHE Program, says Dr. Cortes.
Dr. Cortes has held many adjunct faculty positions including Clinical Professor at Yale University School of Nursing and Clinical Assistant Professor at Mount Sinai School of Medicine. While in nursing service at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York as well as at Rockefeller University Hospital, Dr. Cortes developed innovative models for utilizing advanced practice nurses.
Dr. Cortes is a Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing as well as Past Fellow in the prestigious RWJ Executive Nurse Fellows Program. She recently received the Distinguished Alumni Award from New York University, where she received her PhD and Masters Degree. Dr. Cortes’ BSN is from Villanova University, where she serves on the Board of Trustees.
