Dr. Deepak Saxena, a NYU College of Dentistry (NYUCD) microbiologist and an engineer at Sandia National Laboratories, part of the U.S. Department of Energy, are partnering to develop a technology that will facilitate bacterial identification. Their study was recently funded with a three-year, $1.63 million grant from the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR) of the NIH.

NYU Abu Dhabi, the first comprehensive liberal arts campus established by a major U.S.research university, officially opened the doors to its Downtown Campus today in a dedication ceremony that featured His Highness Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, crown prince of Abu Dhabi, His Excellency Khaldoon Al Mubarak, chairman of the Abu Dhabi Executive Affairs Authority, NYU President John Sexton and Alfred Bloom, vice chancellor of NYU Abu Dhabi. The study, led by Dr. Shiela Strauss, Associate Professor of Nursing and Co-Director of the Statistics and Data Management Core for NYUs Colleges of Dentistry and Nursing, examined data from 2,923 adult participants in the 2003-2004 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey who had not been diagnosed with diabetes. The findings, published December 2009 in the online edition of the Journal of Public Health Dentistry, add to a growing body of evidence linking periodontal infections to an increased risk for diabetes.

New York Universitys Fales Library, home of one of the nations largest and most prestigious collections in food studies, has acquired Gourmet magazines 3,500 volume library through a gift from Rozanne Gold. Golds gift enabled Fales Library to purchase the volumes from Condé Nast, which bought the influential and widely acclaimed magazine in 1983 and folded it in fall 2009.
