Common Challenges, Uncommon Cities: A Critical Examination of Mega Urban Transportation Projects, Sept. 21

September 18, 2009
N-34, 2009-10

On Monday, September 21, 2009, NYU Abu Dhabi and the NYU Wagner Rudin Center for Transportation Policy and Management will present Professor Harry Dimitrious, Director of the Omega Centre at the University College of London. His remarks will focus on mega-development, an issue of common concern to New York and Abu Dhabi, the anchors of NYU’s Global Network University.

The program, entitled “Building Big,” will begin at 6:30 p.m. at NYU Wagner, The Puck Building, Second Floor, 295 Lafayette Street, New York, N.Y.

In his talk, Professor Dimitrious will outline a unique approach to the use of story-telling in the understanding the decision-making used in the planning and delivery of ten vast urban transportation mega-projects from around the world. He will highlight some of his early research findings from the use of this methodology as applied to the Omega Centre’s first case study, the Channel Tunnel Rail Link between the UK and France.

His remarks will include comments on how these findings apply to other mature established areas such as New York as well as newly developing cities such as Abu Dhabi.

Professor Dimitrious is Bartlett Professor of Planning Studies, the Director of the Omega Centre of Mega Projects in Transport and Development at University College London, and has served as Head of the Bartlett School of Planning. He has served as an international consultant to numerous governments and international development agencies in Europe, the Middle East, West Africa and Asia, and is author of several books on urban transport policy and planning, urban development and strategic regional planning.

This is the first of a series of talks by leading thinkers from around the world on issues facing New York and Abu Dhabi. The curator of the NYU Abu Dhabi/ Rudin Center series is Anthony Shorris, Professor of Practice at the Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service, and Director of the Rudin Center. Before joining NYU, Shorris was Executive Director of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.
