NYU College of Dentistry's Dr. Donna Shelley, Smoking Cessation Expert, Available to Comment On the April 1st Federal Cigarette Tax Increase

Get Help to Quit Smoking and Save $2,540.00 Annually, Shelley Says

On April 1, the federal tax on cigarettes will increase by 62 cents per pack. The combination of federal, state, and local taxes means a pack-a-day smoker in New York City and NY State will spend more than $2,540 on cigarettes in a year.

Dr. Donna Shelley, clinical associate professor at the NYU College of Dentistry and School of Medicine says: “Regardless of your age, how long you’ve been smoking, or how much you smoke, quitting smoking now has immediate and long-term benefits. You may feel uneasy about trying to quit, especially if you have tried to do so in the past. The good news is that you no longer need to rely on willpower alone. In fact, it’s been shown that seeking support increases your chance of quitting forever.”

NYU’s College of Dentistry (NYUCD), through partnership with the NYU College of Nursing’s Faculty Practice (NFP), offers its patients ways to get the support needed, including free nicotine replacement therapy to smokers who are interested in quitting.

Quitting eliminates or reduces all of the expenses that go along with smoking. Just imagine what you could do with those savings - pay off that credit card debt, plan a nice vacation, buy a gym membership, or get a new flat screen television!

Shelley, launched the Manhattan Tobacco Cessation Program (MTCP) in 2005, which is one of 19 cessation centers statewide funded by the New York State Department of Health’s Tobacco Control Program. The program also based at the NFP, partners with healthcare providers, hospitals, and community health centers throughout Manhattan to assist in building and strengthening patient tobacco cessation services.
