New York University School of Law has established the Center on the Administration of Criminal Law, a non-partisan advocacy organization and think tank dedicated to the promotion of good government practices in criminal matters. The Center analyzes critical issues in criminal law, particularly prosecutorial power and discretion, and uses that information to produce scholarship, to participate in important litigation, and to influence public policy.

New York University and the American Museum of Natural History have received a $1.6 million grant from the National Science Foundation to explore plant evolution and to create a public database that provides information about the structure and inferred function of proteins found in two plant genomes. The three-year grant will allow the researchers at both institutions to investigate ground-breaking methods for exploring the evolution, structure, and function of proteomes the entire array of proteins expressed by a genome.

NYU School of Laws Center on the Administration of Criminal Law filed an amicus curiae brief today in the United States District Court for the District of Utah. The brief supports a petition to vacate, set aside, or correct petitioners sentence in U.S. v. Angelos, in which petitioner Weldon Angelos, who had no prior convictions, was sentenced to 55 years in prison for selling several hundred dollars worth of marijuana on two occasions while carrying a gun, and for possessing a gun in his home on another occasion.

You might think that the farthest distance at which you can hold a book and still read it quickly is determined by the size of the letters. However, New York University neuroscientists have concluded that its the spacing between letters, not their size, that matters. A broad review of this crowding phenomenon, appearing in the latest issue of the journal Nature Neuroscience, shows that this critical spacing is the same for all objects, including letters, animals, and furniture.

Brain Imaging Study Provides New Insight Into Why People Pay Too Much in Auctions, NYU Researchers Find

By combining brain imaging techniques with behavioral economic research, neuroscientists and economists at New York University were able to provide new insight into this tendency to overbid. Specifically, they show that the fear of losing the social competition inherent in an auction may, in part, cause people to pay too much. The campus, which is expected to open in 2012, will be located in the Marina District of Saadiyat Island. Saadiyat Island also will host other major intellectual and cultural institutions, such as the Louvre, the Guggenheim, the Sheikh Zayed National Museum, and the Performing Arts Centre.
