Stereotype Threat Affects Women in High-Level Math Courses, Study Finds

In a field study in the latest issue of the Journal of Applied Developmental Psychology, women at the high end of math ability outperform their male counterparts on tests when the test is described as free of gender differences. The women performed as well as their male counterparts under normal testing conditions. NYU Steinhardt Students, Faculty, and Staff Travel to Peru for Winter Break Service Project

In January, 143 New York University students and deans built 262 cleaner burning stoves, treated 800 patients, built three lavatories at schools, and planted 6,000 trees over 10 days in the cities of Cusco and Urubamba, Peru. The cohort included undergraduate students and deans from the Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development; Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholars; and members of NYU administration. Working with ProPeru Service Corps, a not for profit development agency, the group worked 9-hour days to complete development projects alongside Andean community members; many of the students stayed with host families in Cusco, the seat of Incan heritage.

Researchers at New York University and Israel’s Weizmann Institute of Science have identified patterns of brain activation linked to the formation of long-term memories. The study, which appeared in the journal Neuron, also offered an innovative and more comprehensive method for gauging memories. It asked subjects to recall the content of a television sit-com, which more accurately simulated real-life experiences because it required retrieving material that occurs in more complex settings than typically exist in a laboratory environment.

NYU School of Law’s Center on the Administration of Criminal Law filed an amicus curiae brief today in the United States District Court for the District of Utah. The brief supports a petition to vacate, set aside, or correct petitioner’s sentence in U.S. v. Angelos, in which petitioner Weldon Angelos, who had no prior convictions, was sentenced to 55 years in prison for selling several hundred dollars worth of marijuana on two occasions while carrying a gun, and for possessing a gun in his home on another occasion.

On August 31, 2008, NYU closed the books on its seven-year “Campaign for NYU,” exceeding its $2.5 billion goal by over $500 million; as such, it is the largest completed campaign in US higher education. In its final year, the campaign raised $862 million, one of the largest one-year totals in the history of higher education fundraising. The total raised through the campaign — $3,075,986,225 - was the equivalent of raising some $1.2 million per day, seven days per week, for the entire seven-year period.

NYU College of Dentistry Receives $600,000 Grant From Susan G. Komen Foundation

The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation has recently awarded an NYU dental research team a three-year, $600,000 grant to study whether nutrients and antioxidants found in broccoli, grapes, and other naturally occurring compounds could prevent breast cancer. The study’s principal investigator, Joseph Guttenplan, a professor of basic science and craniofacial biology, is testing multiple formulations of a half-dozen nutrients and antioxidants to determine which formulations could most effectively prevent the mutations that can lead to cancer.
