            The New York University Creative Writing Program Fall 2007 Reading Series continues in November with a number of special readings and events.  Most events are held in the program’s new home in Greenwich Village – the Lillian Vernon Creative Writers House, located at 58 W. 10th Street, unless otherwise noted.  (Please note that the November 9th reading with Breyten Breytenbach has been moved from KGB Bar to Writers House.)  The series is free and open to the public.  For further information, call Danielle Veith at 212.998.8850; email danielle.veith@nyu.edu; or visit www.cwp.fas.nyu.edu.

Thursday, Nov. 1, 7 p.m.

            The New Salon: Fiction Writers in Conversation.  Featuring A.M. Homes, author of several novels, short story collections, and memoirs, most recently The Mistress’s Daughter.  She has also written for the television series The L Word.  In conversation with Darin Strauss, author of Chang and Eng and The Real McCoy.

 

Friday, Nov. 2, 7 p.m.

            Reading and conversation with Janette Turner Hospital, author of Orpheus Lost, Oyster, Due Preparations for the Plague, and other novels.

 

Thursday, Nov. 8, 7 p.m.

            Poetry reading:  Pulitzer Prize-winning author Yusef Komunyakaa, author of numerous books of poetry including Pleasure Dome: New & Collected Poems.  Introduced by Sharon Olds.  Note venue:  NYU Silver Center, Hemmerdinger Hall, 100 Washington Square East.

Friday, Nov. 9, 7 p.m.

Emerging Writers Reading with Breyten Breytenbach, distinguished poet, fiction writer, dramatist, essayist, painter and activist whose work includes The True Confessions of an Albino Terrorist, a memoir of time spent in South Africa’s prisons and his latest book, Windcatcher: New & Selected Poems.  The Emerging Writers Reading Series showcases the talent of NYU’s graduate Creative Writing Program and features an established writer as a special guest.  Please Note: The reading with Breyten Breytenbach has been moved from KGB Bar to the Lillian Vernon Creative Writers House.

            The New Salon: Poets in Conversation, featuring Brenda Shaughnessy, author of Interior with Sudden Joy and the forthcoming Human Dark with Sugar.  In conversation with Rob Casper.  Co-sponsored with the Poetry Society of America. 

 

Wednesday, Nov. 28, 7 p.m.

            “The Geometry of Hope” Creative Writing Prize Reading:  Readings by the finalists of the undergraduate student prize for the best poem or short prose piece inspired by NYU Grey Art Gallery’s exhibition, “The Geometry of Hope: Latin American Abstract Art from the Patricia Phelps de Collection.”

 

Thursday, Nov. 29, 7 p.m.

            Poet Philip Levine 80th Birthday Tribute:  a reading to celebrate the birthday of one of our most important and influential poets, featuring Philip Levine, Kate Daniels, E.L. Doctorow, Edward Hirsch, Galway Kinnell, Yusef Komunyakaa, Malena Mörling, Sharon Olds, Tom Sleigh, Gerald Stern, Jean Valentine, and Charles Wright.  Co-sponsored with the 92nd St. Y Unterberg Poetry Center, the Academy of American Poets, Cave Canem Foundation, Cooper Union, Knopf, Poets House, the Poetry Society of America, and Poets & Writers.  Note venue:  Cooper Union’s Great Hall, 7 E. 7th St.

            Reading:  acclaimed NY poets read selections from the Alhambra Poetry Calendar 2008 and their own work.  A desk calendar and anthology, Alhambra showcases the best American and British poets from the 14th to the 21st centuries.
