Terry Fulmer, Dean of NYU College of Nursing, Named to Skidmore College Board of Trustees


Terry Fulmer, PhD, RN, FAAN, the Erline Perkins McGriff Professor and Dean of the College of Nursing at New York University, has been appointed as a Trustee of Skidmore College. She was named during summer 2007 to the 35-member board, which guides this prestigious liberal arts college in Saratoga Springs, New York, from which Dr. Fulmer received her bachelor’s degree in 1976.

For Immediate Release Contact: Christopher James Terry Fulmer, PhD, RN, FAAN, the Erline Perkins McGriff Professor and Dean of the College of Nursing at New York University, has been appointed as a Trustee of Skidmore College. She was named during summer 2007 to the 35-member board, which guides this prestigious liberal arts college in Saratoga Springs, New York, from which Dr. Fulmer received her bachelor’s degree in 1976.

Dr. Fulmer, a researcher, scholar, and advocate of health care for older adults, has made it her life’s mission to educate health care professionals about excellence in care of the older adult. Dr. Fulmer was named the first dean of NYU College of Nursing, when the college’s status was elevated from a division in 2005. Under her leadership, the college’s enrollment has dramatically increased and the faculty size doubled. In the midst of a major nursing shortage that continues to raise national concern, Dr. Fulmer’s commitment to educating more, and more highly qualified, nurses is unwavering.

Dr. Fulmer received both master’s and doctoral degrees from Boston College and received her Geriatric Nurse Practitioner Post Master’s Certificate from New York University. She also completed a Brookdale National Fellowship at Columbia University. A pioneer in geriatric nursing, Dr. Fulmer was the first nurse to serve as president of the Gerontological Society of America and was also the first nurse to be elected to the board of the American Geriatrics Society. She is the author or co-author of more than 150 papers and textbooks. Two of her nine books have received American Journal of Nursing Book of the Year Awards. She is responsible for the development of the Elder Assessment Instrument (EAI), a screening checklist for elder abuse that is currently used nationwide.
