The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) has named four NYU faculty as 2007 fellows: Moses Chao, a professor of cell biology, physiology, neuroscience, and psychiatry at NYUs School of Medicine; Claude Desplan, a professor of biology; Paul Glimcher, an associate professor of neural science, psychology, and economics; and Guillermina Jasso, a professor of sociology. Election as a fellow is an honor bestowed upon AAAS members by their peers.
This year 471 members have been awarded this honor by AAAS because of their scientifically or socially distinguished efforts to advance science or its applications. New fellows will be honored on Feb. 16 during the 2008 AAAS Annual Meeting in Boston. The below describes why the new NYU fellows were selected:
- Moses Chao: For outstanding contributions to cellular and molecular neuroscience, particularly to our understanding of the mechanisms of action of neurotrophic factors.
- Claude Desplan: For distinguished contributions to the field of developmental biology, particularly for the genetics of color vision and the evolution of insect development;
- Paul Glimcher: For fundamental contributions to our understanding of the neural bases of behavior, including eye movements and decision making;
- Guillermina Jasso: For pioneering contributions to theories of justice evaluation and socio-behavoral forces, and for leadership in the conduct and analysis of the New Immigrant Survey.
The tradition of AAAS Fellows began in 1874. Currently, members can be considered for the rank of Fellow if nominated by the Steering Groups of the Association
