New Nurses Verbally Abused by Colleagues Have Lower Commitment to Employer, Less Likely to Stay in Current Job

Verbal abuse against nurses in the workplace, including abuse by other nurses, is both common and well-documented. The negative effects of that abuse and the adverse impact on patient care are also well-documented. Now, a study of newly licensed registered nurses (NLRNs) finds that nurses who are verbally abused by nursing colleagues report lower job satisfaction, unfavorable perceptions of their work environment, and greater intent to leave their current job.

Dr. Yu Zhang, an associate professor of biomaterials and biomimetics at the New York University College of Dentistry, has been awarded a five-year, $1.9 million grant from the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR), National Institutes of Health (NIH), to develop and test a prototype glass-zirconia composite dental crown.

A study published in the current issue of Health Care Management Review indicates that there are other aspects of registered nurses’ (RNs) work environments that RNs perceive can also have a significant impact on the quality of care they deliver.
