The Student Government Assembly (SGA) is the overarching Student Government body within New York University's (NYU) governance structure. The Student Government Assembly is a joint meeting of the Student Senators Council (SSC) and Presidents Council. The Student Government Assembly is an open meeting for the student body.

The goal of the SSC is to create policy that improves the student experience. The SSC considers matters in which the interests, rights, or responsibilities of students are involved and takes special responsibility in bringing student concerns to the attention of the University Senate and appropriate university administration.

The Presidents Council is parallel to the SSC and focuses on student engagement and implementation of any SSC approved policies. The Presidents Council create recommendations for councils and work to improve the student experience through programs and cross-school collaboration.

About the University Senate

How It Works: The University Governance Structure

The University Senate is the highest deliberative body at NYU. It was created for the discussion of university-wide policies and proposed changes in university practices and structure. The Senate sets its agenda with particular concern for academic programs and structure, personnel and budgetary policies, development of facilities and community, professional, and educational relations of the university.

The University Senate, chaired by the University President, is comprised of the Student Senators Council (SSC), the Administrative Management Council (AMC), the Deans Council, the Tenured/Tenure-Track Faculty Senators Council, and the Full-Time Non-Tenure Track/Contract Faculty Senators Council. The SSC holds 35 seats on the University Senate and represents student interests on that body.
