The Administrative Issues Committee examines non-academic areas which have an impact on faculty.

Making Google+ Available to NYU Users

The Committee met with members of the administration regarding adding Google+ to suite of NYU's Apps for Ed and discussed privacy concerns and the product's commercial versus academic license.

The FSC approved use of Google+ on an individual opt-in basis.The Council wished to emphasize that the Social Media Policy, once approved, should take precedence over any preliminary Google+ best practices and solutions adopted in the interim period.

Weapons Policy

After review by the Administrative Issues and Governance Committees, the FSC approved the new Policy on Weapons, Simulated Weapons and Theatrical Use of Weapons at the January meeting.

The Committees sought clarification on one item in Section B, which currently reads:

NYU prohibits the possession of any Weapon and, except as set forth below in “D”, any Simulated Weapon, (i) in and/or around the NYU campus, including any and all NYU facilities (whether academic, residential, or other facilities), and this prohibition extends to all NYU property, whether owned, leased, or controlled by NYU, regardless of whether the bearer or possessor is licensed to carry that Weapon and (ii) at any NYU-sponsored activity, whether on-campus or off-campus.

Our question is this: Does the highlighted phrase [in and/or around the NYU campus] mean that NYU has the right to regulate weapons on property it does not own, but which abuts or is adjacent to NYU property, including public property?

Answer:

The Clery Handbook requires NYU to disclose statistics for reported Clery crimes that occur: 1) on campus; 2) on public property within or immediately adjacent to the campus; and 3) in or on non-campus buildings or property that the institution owns or controls. The NYU weapons policy is intended to be consistent with this set of requirements.

Online Directory and Search Engine on NYU Website

The Committee  met in November with John Beckman, Vice President for Public Affairs, and Jim Robertson, Executive Director of Web Services, on the challenges of the search functions on the NYU website.

Follow-up items: Ways to improve the online directory and the NYU search engine are being pursued and more information will be provided about the progress. 

Coles/Palladium Facilities

The Committee met with Alison Leary, Executive Vice President for Operations, in January to discuss issues regarding the Coles/Palladium facilities raised in the Spring 2010 FSC survey. The main concerns included high membership rates, payment schedule, additional charges for classes, operating hours, and family policies. The Committee offered their suggestions for more flexible membership plans, lower fees, and discussed ways to better advertise the facilities as part of NYU’s wellness and benefits information. In addition, with the upcoming 2031 project, questions were raised concerning the plans for a temporary fitness center.

In February, the Committee met with Marc Wais, Vice President for Student Affairs, and Christopher Bledsoe, Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs Director of Athletics, to further discuss these issues.

Operating hours UPDATE

The NYU Department of Athletics, Intramurals and Recreation is pleased to announce an early opening for the Coles Sport & Recreation Center during the 2012-13 academic year.

Beginning Monday, August 27th 2012 and running through Tuesday, May 21st 2013, excluding holiday periods, Coles will open on Monday through Friday mornings at 6:30 am.

The early morning hours will be conducted as a trial during the 2012-13 academic year.

This Coles Center trial will be offered on weekday mornings during the fall 2012 and spring 2013 academic terms only and will not include:

• The Palladium Athletic Facility
• Special Event Closures
• Weekends
• Holidays
• Winter or Spring Recess, or
• the Summer Operating Schedule

Membership fees are used by the Athletics Department to operate and maintain the Coles and Palladium facilities and to offer the programming that takes place. Coles is open 336 days; the Palladium is open 349 days. Both facilities and the pools are open over 100 hours per week during the academic year and over 90 hours per week during the summer. Each year over 10,000 NYU community members enroll in 265 Recreation classes.Classes are offered 30 weeks each year in six five- week sessions.

Member fees pay for facility improvements, including the following recent projects:

• The Coles roof was resurfaced this fall and is open
• The Coles women’s locker room showers and changing rooms were renovated
  this past summer
• The men’s shower was renovated in 2010
  
• All of the strength and cardio equipment is replaced every three years
• The Coles and Palladium playing floors are resurfaced each year

Family Membership and other Options

Employee members may purchase a membership for their children aged 16- 21. The age range is set as most appropriate for free use of the facilities.

On Family Days, children ages 8-15 may use the facilities with a member. Each child that enters is charged the guest fee. During the Academic Year family days are Saturday and Sunday from 9am - 4pm.During the Summer and Winter breaks, they are Monday - Sunday 9am - 4pm.

The Parents/Guardians and Children and Youth program allows toddlers and up to register for recreation classes.These children of facility members may come in for their class with an accompanying adult. As with all Recreation classes, a minimum and maximum enrollments for each class and section is set. Recreation classes are offered six “quarters” each year: two during the Fall, Spring and Summer terms. Registration can be done both on-line and in-person. Registration periods are posted on the NYU Athletics website, in the NYU Minute, on other NYU web pages and in the facilities.
