Senators and Committees

Faculty Senators

• Faculty Senators are elected for a three-year term from September 1 of the first year until August 31 of the third year.
• As members of the Faculty Senators Council (FSC), they attend all monthly FSC meetings (Thursday, 12-2 pm) and University Senate meetings (alternate Thursday, 2-4 pm)
  
•  Senators serve on committees of the FSC and/or the University Senate, generally a total of 3 committees. 
• Senators are expected to represent the concerns and interests of faculty, to report regularly on the activities of the University Senate and Faculty Senators Council to their school faculty (e.g., at meetings of school faculty councils or in written memoranda), and, by reviewing and responding to minutes and special reports, to keep abreast of the issues and activities that the University Senate and the FSC are addressing. 

Alternate Senators

• Alternate Senators are also elected for a three-year term from September 1 of the first year until August 31 of the third year. They are assigned to a specific senator.
• If a Faculty Senator is unable to attend an FSC or University Senate meeting, his/her Alternate shall attend in his/her place. In cases where an Alternate is representing or replacing a Senator he/she shall have full voting privileges.
• Alternate Senators are also encouraged to attend occasional meetings of the Faculty Senators Council and University Senate in a non-voting capacity in order to acquaint themselves with the operation of this body.
• Alternate Senators may be asked to serve on committees, with the right to vote on committee matters should that be required. However, Alternates should generally not be asked to serve as committee chairs unless they are in an extended period of active service.

FSC and Senate Committees

Faculty Senators serve as members of the FSC and University Senate Committees. The 12 FSC Committees focus on areas including administrative issues, communications, teaching excellence, global network university initiatives, faculty benefits, faculty/student relations, finance and policy planning, grievance, governance, housing, personnel and affirmative action, and tenure modifications. The 6 related University Senate Committees, comprised of representatives from each Council (AMC, FSC, SSC, etc.), center on issues including academic affairs, financial affairs, organization & governance, public affairs, judicial board, and student life.

Faculty Senators typically serve on 3 Committees (including Senate and/or FSC committees) and submit their membership preferences in early summer. These requests will be honored, if possible, as assignments are made by the Faculty Senators Council Executive Committee.
