The Executive Committee election took place on May 3, 2012. The following EC members were re-elected for the 2013-2013 academic year:

The Executive Committee takes office following the May FSC meeting and serves to the following May. New Senators terms begin September 1.


Ted Magder

Senator Magder is an associate professor in the Department of Media, Culture, and Communication, in the Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development, where he served as department chair between 2003 and 2009.  He has served on a variety of university task forces and committees, including the Undergraduate Academic Affairs Committee, the Human Resources Policies Assessment Task Force, and the Abu Dhabi Social Science Curriculum Committee.  He is also Director of the Council for Media and Culture at NYU.  

Senator Magder’s scholarly research examines the legal and regulatory regimes that structure and influence the flow of media and culture across borders. Recent publications explore the UNESCO Convention on the Protection and Promotion of Diversity in Cultural Expressions, online gambling and the World Trade Organization, and the general legal principles of world communication. He is completing a monograph to be called Regardless of Frontiers: The Legal Foundations of World Communication.


Marie Monaco

Senator Monaco is in the second year of her first term on the FSC, having previously served as an active alternate in 2009-2010.  Senator Monaco has served as a member of the Benefits Committee, the Grievance Committee and the Governance Committee, and currently chairs the Tenure Modifications Committee.  

At the School of Medicine, Senator Monaco has served as a representative on the Faculty Council from the Department of Physiology & Neuroscience as well as President of the Council (2009-2010).  She has chaired the Housing Committee, the Benefits and Tenure Committee and the Academic Affairs Committee, and has served on the Policy, Budget and Salaries Committee. 

Senator Monaco is a tenured Associate Professor in the Department of Physiology & Neuroscience.  She has co-directed the medical school Physiology Course and is currently a content director for, and a teacher in, the Endocrine Module of the new medical school curriculum.  She also participates in the teaching of the Endocrine Surgery Selective for fourth year medical students.  Senator Monaco conducts research in the field breast cancer under the auspices of a grant from the Department of Defense.  




Mary Ann Jones

Senator Jones is serving her fourth term as the representative of the Silver School of Social Work to the Faculty Senators Council.  She currently chairs the Faculty Benefits Committee of the Council.

Senator Jones is an Associate Professor at the Silver School, where she teaches in and chairs the Research Curriculum Area in the Master’s Program.  Her research and professional background and interests include child and family welfare, psychotherapy research, the experience of LGBT individuals in psychotherapy, survey research methods, and applications of positive psychology.

Senator Schacht completed his three-year term on the FSC in the Spring of 2010, and was appointed for a second term, term ending 2013. This is his fourth term as senator.  

Senator Schacht is a tenured professor of pediatric nephrology serving 12 years as the residency program director, 20 years as the vice-chair of pediatrics until 2004, and is active in recruiting and mentoring students, residents, fellows and new faculty. He has recently been awarded a CTSA grant measuring Pediatric Outcomes of Hypertension.



Executive Committee

The Executive Committee of the Faculty Senators Council consists of a Chair, Vice Chair, Secretary, and Immediate Past Chair (not pictured)


Responsibilities of the Executive Committee

  • oversees and organizes all Council activities
  • meets twice per month or as needed to discuss FSC matters, prepare for meetings, appoint members to committees/taskforces, etc.
  • meets a few times per semester with the President and a few times per semester with the Provost on behalf of the Council.
  • appoints the chairs and members of the FSC and University Senate committees.
  • nominates candidates for the positions of Senator-at-Large and Alternate Senator-at-Large.
  • reviews all communications of the Faculty Senators Council
  • The Chair shall preside at all meetings of the Faculty Senators Council in accordance with Robert’s Rules.  In the absence of the Chair, the Vice Chair shall preside at the meeting.  In absence of both the Chair and the Vice Chair, the Secretary shall preside.
  • The Secretary shall bear the ultimate responsibility for the minutes.

Nominations

  • The Executive Committee appoints a Nominating Committee by January to consist of 3 members of the Council in the second year of their current terms or the first year of their successive terms.
  • The Nominating Committee for the election of the Chair-elect includes, as an ex-officio member, the current Chair of the Council.  The Nominating Committee for the election of the Vice Chair and Secretary includes, as an ex-officio, the Chair-elect.
  • The Nominating Committee prepares a slate of at least two candidates for the position of Chair-elect to be announced in the notice of the January meeting.
  • The Nominating Committee prepares a slate of at least two candidates for the positions of Vice Chair and Secretary to be announced in the notice of the April meeting.

Elections

  • The Chair-elect is elected by secret ballot at the February meeting and will sit with the Executive Committee thereafter. 
  • The Vice Chair and the Secretary are elected by secret ballot at the May meeting.

Terms of Service

  • The Chair-elect will become Chair following the May meeting of the Council and serve until the following May. In the rare instance that the Chair-elect is in his/her third year of service and is not reelected as Senator in his/her school, he/she would be nominated to serve one three-year term as Senator-at-Large. The Past Chair will continue to serve on the Executive Committee, even if he or she has completed his/her elected term of office as Faculty Senator.  If the Chair serves a second consecutive term, the Past Chair may remain in office.
  • The Vice Chair and the Secretary will take office following the May meeting of the Council and serve until the following May.
