Athletics, Intramurals, and Recreation

Varsity Athletics

New York University is a member of the University Athletic Association (UAA). Organized in 1986, the UAA is a unique group of universities dedicated to running competitive athletic programs while maintaining academic standards of the highest quality.

If you are interested in trying out for one of NYU's varsity teams, you should visit the team page on www.gonyuathletics.com and fill out the Questionnaire under "Quick Links" on that page. You can also email the coach for more information (click here to access the NYU Athletics Staff Directory).

Intramural Sports / Special Events

The intramural program at NYU offers a wide range of athletic competition. Individual events, such as running and swimming, as well as team sports, such as football and volleyball, are held during the school year. Summer events are programmed as well.  Visit www.gonyuathletics.com/intramurals for more information, including important deadlines and sign up information.

Recreation Courses

Try something new and learn to make a habit of working out!  We promise you won't be alone - last year, over 11,000 members of the NYU community enrolled in over 1,000 department recreation courses. Registration is open to all NYU students.

Visit www.gonyuathletics.com/recreation for a complete list of courses, cost, deadlines and online registration.

Club Sports

Some club sports are recreational and/or instructional in nature, while others provide the opportunity for serious league competition. Regardless of the level of commitment required by the club sport, the desire to participate is always more important than athleticism.  Last year, more than 1,250 students participated in intercollegiate club-sport teams, 20% of whom were graduate students.

Club sports are student-initiated. The basic structure of club sports is to offer student-athletes numerous opportunities for leadership and decision making. The strengths and success of club sports is dependent on the effectiveness of student leadership and the degree of involvement of the club members.

If you are interested in organizing a new club sport, pick up a copy of the Club Sports Handbook, which is available in the Club Sports Office of the Coles Sports Center, online, or you can contact Gail Stentiford at 212-998-2018, ghs2@nyu.edu.

The Club Sports Office is located on the lobby level off the west balcony of Coles Sports Center. Its purpose is to provide assistance, guidance, and the resources for the sports clubs to successfully operate. All members of the Coles Sports Center and Palladium Athletic Facility, except for Coles Community Members, are welcome to participate in club sports. However, only matriculated undergraduate and graduate students are eligible to participate in extramural competitions in those club sports that have competitive extramural schedules.
