Bonnie received her J.D. from Stanford University Law School, where she was an Editor of the Law Review and graduated Order of the Coif, and she received her A.B. from Cornell University, Magna Cum Laude in Economics and With Distinction in All Subjects. Immediately prior to joining NYU in 2009, Bonnie was the first General Counsel of The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, where she served for almost 20 years. Previously, she was a Partner at Ballard, Spahr, Andrews & Ingersoll in Philadelphia, an Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania in its Criminal Division, and a law clerk to the Honorable Joseph S. Lord, III, Chief Judge of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania.
Bonnie is a member of a number of professional organizations, including: the American Law Institute (she serves as an Adviser to its Project on Principles of the Law of Nonprofit Organizations); the American Bar Association’s Tax Section (she is a past Chair of its Committee on Exempt Organizations), Health Law Section (she is a past Chair of the Section), and Coordinating Committee on Nonprofit Governance (she is a past Chair of the Committee); American Corporate Counsel of Greater NY (she is currently the Secretary); the National Association of College and University Attorneys; American Health Lawyers Association (she is a past Director and a current Fellow); and American College of Tax Lawyer. Bonnie served as a member of the IRS Advisory Committee for Tax Exempt and Government Entities for three years and taught Health Care Law and Social Policy at the University of Pennsylvania Law School for eight years. She has received a number of awards and, in 2006, was named one of the 50 Most Influential In-House Counsels in North America. She is an author and frequent lecturer on issues related to tax-exempt organizations, good governance practices by nonprofit organizations, risk management and insurance.
