Mr. Islam has played an instrumental role in launch ing BRAC Uganda in November 2005\, and growing it to become one of the lar gest microfinance institutions in the country\, in that time. BRAC Uganda has disbursed $35 million in loans to more than 90\,000 borrowers through its network of 85 branch offices. It has also scaled up health\, agricultu re\, adolescent development and education programs. Under Mr. Islam's vis ionary leadership\, BRAC has emerged as the largest non-profit in the coun try\, employing more than 1\,500 people and touching the lives of more tha n half a million poor people in Uganda. \n\nMr. Islam joined BRAC in 1983 as a Program Organizer\, and has since served as Regional Manager\, Zonal Manager\, and Program Manager of BRAC’s education program in both Banglad esh and Afghanistan. He holds a Masters in Education and Development from the University of Bristol in the United Kingdom.\n\nAbout BRAC Uganda:\nI n June 2006\, BRAC began operating its Microfinance Program in two distric ts in Uganda - Kampala and Iganga. Since then\, the program has successful ly formed 2\,352 groups\, mobilized 63\,407 poor women as members\, and di sbursed US$16.1 million in microloans to 43\,967 members. Microloans are i nvested primarily in small-scale business\, agriculture\, and construction . According to this viewpoint\, the person is a situated agent\, that is\, always already in medias res. When we consider defense processes along these lines\, we see that pattern s of defensive behavior are fascinating from philosophical and clinical st andpoints: these patterns represent a fundamental struggle against situate d agency.\n\nDr. Westerman will illustrate this phenomenon with clinical m aterial (video clips and excerpts of transcripts) from a set of case studi es on treatments from the Brief Psychotherapy Project at Beth Israel Medic al Center. He will focus on one case and employ discourse-analytic methods to illustrate how defensive patterns involve recurring problems in the wa ys interaction bids fit together over time. Dr. Westerman will show how th ese failures of coordination often function to avoid clear-cut occurrences of feared relationship events\, but will also illustrate how defensive be havior feeds forward to affect what happens in interpersonal interactions in other ways which demonstrate that\, ultimately\, the struggle against s ituated agency cannot be successful. Under his leadership\, the agency significan tly expanded its focus on areas such as health care and climate change. \n \nIn previous government service\, Orszag served as Special Assistant to t he President for Economic Policy and as a staff economist and then Senior Advisor and Senior Economist at the President's Council of Economic Advise rs. Orszag was the Joseph A. Pechman Senior Fellow and Deputy Director of Economic Studies at the Brookings Institution. While at Brookings\, he a lso served as Director of The Hamilton Project\; Director of the Retiremen t Security Project\; and Co-Director of the Tax Policy Center\, a joint ve nture with the Urban Institute.
