DESCRIPTION:Denationalization of Knowledge and Globalization of the Mind:\n
With Jean-Marc Coicaud\, head of the United Nations University at the Offi
ce of the United Nations in New York\n \nSponsored by the International Pu
blic Service Association student group \n\nIn today's world\, national soc
ieties\, developed and developing\, are more and more internationalized. A
t the same time\, with the growth of international norms\, the internation
al realm is more and more socialized. These two trends\, far from bringing
about more peaceful relations\, come along with deep tensions\, if not co
nflicts within and among countries. People and countries beyond borders re
main strangers to each other. The very nature of the academic understandin
g of international affairs does not help the situation. For most of it\, e
specially in the fields of international relations\, history\, law and phi
losophy\, it remains shaped and the captive of national divides. This pres
entation will explore what is at stake\, intellectually and politically\,
in the state of affairs. It will indicate how to denationalize knowledge\,
namely paradoxically by learning about a variety of intellectual and cult
ural traditions\, and contribute to a globalization of the mind which woul
d be respectful of the plurality of the world. \n\nWed.\, Mar. 12\, 2008\n

DESCRIPTION:The Mannahatta Project: Mapping Manhattan Island of 400 Years A
go\n\nSponsored by the Wagner Urban Planning Student Association (UPSA) an
d the Wagner Environmental Policy in Action (WEPA) Student Groups \n\nWith
Eric Sanderson\, PhD\, Landscape Ecologist\, Wildlife Conservation Societ
y \n\nThe Mannahatta Project aims to reconstruct the ecology of Manhattan
when Henry Hudson first explored the area in 1609. Thanks to the support o
f the Wildlife Conservation Society\, the project is nearly completed afte
r almost a decade of research\, including new methods in geographic analys
is and a unique 18th-century map. The research shows Manhattan's ancient s
tream\, American Chestnut groves\, black bear territories\, and where the
Lenapepeoplefished and hunted. Most history books dispense of the pre-Euro
peanhistoryof New York in only a few pages. The Mannahatta Project seeks t
o expand our current understanding of pre-European New York and the enviro
nmental foundation of the city. \n\nThe Mannahatta Project also raises imp
ortant questions for urban planning: \n- How must we take the natural envi
ronment into account in present-day urban planning projects? \n- Are there
ways to restore the historic ecological functions of parts of our city wh
ile maintaining the urban fabric? \n- If there has been such a radical cha
nge in landscape function over the past 400 years\, what will New York loo
 k like in another 400 years? \n\nWed.\, Mar. 26\, 2008\n12:30 pm - 2 pm\n\
