DESCRIPTION:Constitution Day: Rebalancing of Constitutional Powers of the E
xecutive and Legislative Branches: A Status Report on the New Obama Admini
 stration\n\nDoors open at 11:40am - Refreshments will be available.\n\nOve
r 220 years ago in Philadelphia\, the framers of the Constitution set out
to create a system of representative government that would united the 13 f
ormer British colonies under a Federal Government strong enough to defend
its citizens and territory and pursue common national interests\, but stil
l not become so powerful as to devolve into tyranny. \n\nTheir solution wa
s built into the very foundation of the new government with a series of ch
ecks and balances to prevent the President\, the Congress or the Courts fr
om accumulating so much power as to threaten the liberty of the citizens.\
n\nTo celebrate the history of this living document\, join a discussion be
tween Tom Mann\, an congressional scholar with the Brookings Institution a
nd Norm Ornstein\, a political scientist and resident scholar at the Ameri
can Enterprise Institute.\n\nTom and Norm will discuss the "Rebalancing of

DESCRIPTION:Climate Change and Water Series\n\nWith Upmanu Lall\, Alan and
Carol Silberstein Professor of Earth and Environmental Engineering\, Colum
bia University\n\nWater is already a critical factor affecting the social
and economic well-being of a sizable proportion of the world’s population.
However\, with the world’s population projected to double in over the nex
t fifty years\, and water supplies becoming both more scarce and more vola
tile as a result of global warming\, we are likely to face a water crisis
so severe it will reshape everything from our governance structures to our
modes of economic and agricultural production to our patterns of social i
nteraction. Water will be the axis around which much of public policy revo
lves.\n\nThis Tuesday evening series will explore innovative and sustainab
le solutions for water harvesting\, looking at water provision from a new
vantage point: via how water sources are changing as a function of global
warming and increased population pressures. The implications that these sh
ifts will have for water sourcing and water distribution will also be expl
ored.\n\nNYU Wagner\nThe Puck Building\, The Rudin Family Forum for Civic

DESCRIPTION:Building Refugee Livelihoods: Food Security\, the Economic Cris

the Women’s Refugee Commission\n\nThe worldwide financial crisis\, coming
quickly on the heels of a global food crisis\, demonstrates that we have
entered unchartered territory. The world has changed in dramatic ways\, an
d it is the most vulnerable who suffer disproportionately from these crise
 s. Refugees endure cuts in their food rations\, and humanitarian assistanc
e continues to be underfunded. These crises\, however\, also provide oppor
tunities - a chance to rethink our business model and the structure and pr
actice of humanitarian aid. Many argue that it is time to end dependency-
inducing programs and focus as early and as soon as possible on how to hel
p crisis-affected populations resume their lives and their livelihoods. D

DESCRIPTION:Climate Change\, Financial Crisis and Fragile States: The Imper
ative of Rethinking New Dimensions in International Security and Developme
nt\n\nYuvan A. Beejadhur\, Counselor for the World Bank Group \n\nThe thre
at of climate change is real and daunting. Without proper action and coord
inated national and worldwide efforts\, the consequences can be catastroph
ic and irreversible. The financial crisis is not yet over and threatens th
e lives of 400\,000 children per year\, not to mention the millions of peo
ple whose jobs are at risk and would be falling back to poverty. Both iss
ues present formidable obstacles to the achievement of the Millennium Deve
lopment Goals (MDGs). Developing countries\, and especially fragile states
are particularly concerned and at risk. At this critical juncture\, the i
nternational community needs to rethink strategically of such new dimensio
ns in international security and development. Are we better prepared to ta
ckle emerging issues that can emanate from the current crises? Can we mana
ge the unavoidable and avoid the unmanageable? What future role will inter
national institutions play? Yuvan Beejadhur explores these intricate issue
s through the lens of an international organization that is at the forefro
nt of the fight against poverty and increasingly\, climate change. \n\nNYU

economic development (e.g. - asset building\, wealth creation\, and financ

DESCRIPTION:Climate Change and Water Series: Watering Egypt: Political Chal
lenges of Water Management in an Arid Land\n\nwith Jessica Barnes\, Ph.D.
candidate\, Sustainable Development\, School of International and Public A
ffairs\, Columbia University\n\nWater is already a critical factor affecti
ng the social and economic well-being of a sizable proportion of the world
’s population. However\, with the world’s population projected to double
in over the next fifty years\, and water supplies becoming both more scarc
e and more volatile as a result of global warming\, we are likely to face
a water crisis so severe it will reshape everything from our governance st
ructures to our modes of economic and agricultural production to our patte
rns of social interaction. Water will be the axis around which much of pu
blic policy revolves.\n\nThis Tuesday evening series will explore innovati
ve and sustainable solutions for water harvesting\, looking at water provi
sion from a new vantage point: via how water sources are changing as a fun
ction of global warming and increased population pressures. The implicatio
ns that these shifts will have for water sourcing and water distribution w
ill also be explored.\n\nNYU Wagner\nThe Puck Building\, The Rudin Family

DESCRIPTION:Climate Change and Water Series: Rethinking the Science of Clim

 \nwith Mark Carey\, Assistant Professor\, Department of History\, Washingt
on and Lee University \n\nWater is already a critical factor affecting the
social and economic well-being of a sizable proportion of the world’s pop
ulation. However\, with the world’s population projected to double in ove
r the next fifty years\, and water supplies becoming both more scarce and
more volatile as a result of global warming\, we are likely to face a wate
r crisis so severe it will reshape everything from our governance structur
es to our modes of economic and agricultural production to our patterns of
social interaction. Water will be the axis around which much of public p
olicy revolves.\n\nThis Tuesday evening series will explore innovative and
sustainable solutions for water harvesting\, looking at water provision f
rom a new vantage point: via how water sources are changing as a function
of global warming and increased population pressures. The implications tha
t these shifts will have for water sourcing and water distribution will al
so be explored.\n\nNYU Wagner\nThe Puck Building\, The Rudin Family Forum
